What are Dentures?

Dentures are a removable dental appliance used to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are designed to resemble your natural teeth and can even enhance your smile. Dentures are available as a complete denture or a partial denture. A complete denture is used for patients missing all of their teeth, while a partial denture is used when a patient still has some natural teeth remaining. A benefit of a partial denture is preventing the natural teeth from shifting while filling the spaces of the missing teeth.

A complete denture can be either “conventional” or “immediate”. Conventional dentures are made once the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue is healed. The healing process can usually take 4 to 6 weeks, and during this time patients will go without teeth. An immediate denture is made in advance and placed immediately after the teeth are removed. This allows the patient to have teeth while their gums are healing. With an immediate denture, once the tissue has finished healing adjustments will have to be made.

Dentures are a durable appliance and are designed to last many years. However, they may need to be repaired, adjusted, or remade due to normal wear.

Reasons for Dentures

• Loss of all teeth in either the upper or lower arch will require a complete denture.
• Loss of several teeth in either the upper or lower arch can be fixed with a partial denture.
• Improved speech, chewing, and digestion from properly made and adjusted dentures.
• Enhancements to a patient’s smile and facial features.

Getting Dentures

Patients will need to be seen over several appointments, spread across a period of several weeks. Our qualified Jonesboro dentist will make a custom denture using highly accurate impressions (molds) taken during one of your earlier appointments. You may be asked to come in for numerous “try-in” appointments to ensure your custom denture is the proper color, fit, and shape. At your final appointment we will make sure the denture is precisely adjusted and placed, providing a comfortable and natural fit.

Once you have your new denture, it is normal to experience temporary chewing and speech difficulty, increased saliva flow, and some soreness. These symptoms will subside once your muscles and tissues get used to the new denture.

Our NEA dental practice will provide you with proper care instructions for your custom made denture. To aid in the life of your new denture, good oral hygiene, regular dental visits, and proper cleaning of your dental appliance is essential. If you have questions or would like to make an appointment for dentures in Jonesboro, give Dr. McCleskey a call today.
